This year's event will highlight ALA President Camila Alire’s Family Literacy Focus, an initiative to encourage families in ethnically diverse communities to read and learn together. Many Voices, One Nation brings together writers and artists from different perspectives and presents a rich program of spoken word, music and performance that celebrates and reminds us of the many unique cultures sharing one world.

Tools to Promote Family Literacy and Advocacy

    ALA’s five ethnic affiliates developed culturally relevant family literacy initiatives in response to ALA President Camila Alire’s call to action . The affiliates (American Indian Library Association, Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Black Caucus of ALA; Chinese American Librarians Association, and REFORMA, the association to promote library services to the Spanish speaking) will describe their projects, the impact, and ways to replicate these innovative activities. Panel moderators: Patty Wong and Mary Jo Venetis, Alire Initiative representatives.

What To Do Before You Digitize - Roadmap for Smaller Institutions (Committee on Rural Native & Tribal Libraries of All Kinds program)

    This session will cover the issues to consider before you digitize and help you learn to successfully plan, implement, and maintain a digital collection. This workshop will use presentations, games, and examples from the field to teach basic concepts of digital project planning and digital preservation. This guidance is intended to make sure that your digital collections are safely stored, properly formatted, and accompanied with useful metadata so that when changes come, your collections will be ready for them.

AILA Indigenous Peoples in the Americas: Access to Electronic Primary Resource Materials at the Library of Congress
Madison Building, National Digital Library (NDL) Learning Center, capacity 60 people

    Most of the current Library of Congress resource materials are in electronic format and can be found on the web. Learn about the new LC online classification for Indigenous Peoples in the Americas (history, sociology, law, etc) and a planned pilot project using this classification as a discovery and direct access tool to web resources. Program will be held at the Library of Congress, Madison Building, National Digital Library (NDL) Learning Center--capacity limited to 60 attendees, so please arrive early. Sponsored by the American Indian Library Association and the OLOS Subcommittee on Library Services to Native Americans.

Numbers that Speak Volumes: Using Data to Make the Case for Rural Libraries

    As libraries struggle to meet growing demand with the same or less funding, the need to effectively communicate the value of libraries in the Internet Age is more important than ever. Get tips, tools and templates for using local and national library data to strengthen your message to your funders, elected officials, board members and the media. This session will prepare you to maximize your participation in Library Advocacy Day (6-29-10) and state lobby days, as well as write better grant applications, annual reports and budget presentations.

Stress and depression in the workplace: Effective methods for preventing and/or treating emotional challenges

    Anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status can suffer from depression. No job category or professional level is immune. Every year, 9.5% of the population suffer from a depressive illness – often linked strongly to other chronic illnesses. Much of this suffering is unnecessary. There ARE solutions and libraries have a key role to play in promoting awareness. This program will address the signs, symptoms, causes, and effects of depression, as well as treatment options, holistic approaches to achieving and maintaining mental and physical health.

    The third American Indian Youth Literature Awards presentation. This award identifies and honors the very best writing and illustrations by and about American Indians. The program will include speakers, awards presentation, and cultural performances.
